Maritime Gendarmerie Welcomes PCG Rozel to Cherbourg
The arrival of PCG Rozel at her home port of Cherbourg on 9 June 2025 marks a significant milestone in modernising the maritime capabilities of the French Maritime Gendarmerie.

Next-Generation Vessels for French Maritime Operations
This coastal patrol vessel, commissioned by the "Direction Générale de l'Armement", is the first of two vessels currently under contract in a programme that could ultimately comprise up to six vessels. She represents the successful collaboration between SOCARENAM shipyard and MAURIC, showcasing French excellence in naval design for law enforcement agencies.
MAURIC Expertise Supporting Maritime Innovation
MAURIC stands out for its proven track record and rapid response capability in creating bespoke naval designs. The firm delivers simple, reliable and economically optimised technical solutions. Their particularly effective design expertise in hull structure optimisation provides a decisive advantage for PCG Rozel's performance. These solutions perfectly align with French defence requirements.
An Established Consortium for High-Performance Vessels
The SOCARENAM-MAURIC partnership capitalises on solid experience in creating energy-efficient vessels, combining competitive construction costs with high quality standards. This strategic collaboration benefits from several major naval programmes for French and international forces.
Their joint achievements include projects for the French and Belgian armed forces, as well as maritime affairs departments. Currently under construction are:
•
A 53m Belgian Navy Coastal Patrol Vessel,
•
The next-generation 53m Maritime Affairs Patrol Vessel featuring innovative hybrid sailing propulsion,
•
The 80m POM Overseas Patrol Vessel series.
These projects demonstrate the confidence placed by naval authorities in this established partnership.
Technical Specifications
PCG Rozel features dimensions well-suited to coastal missions, with an overall length of 46 metres and a beam of 8.5 metres. Her design combines a steel hull with an aluminium superstructure.
Unlike previous patrol vessels, PCG Rozel incorporates a stern ramp, significantly improving the launch and recovery of the 6.5-metre high-speed RHIB intervention craft. This innovative configuration facilitates maritime policing and rescue operations.
Initial sea trials confirmed the vessel's excellent seakeeping qualities, particularly in rough seas. This performance demonstrates the effectiveness of the hydrodynamic studies developed by MAURIC and validates the architectural choices made.
With accommodation for a crew of 15 and seven-day endurance at sea, PCG Rozel offers sustained intervention capability, essential for maritime surveillance missions in French waters. She represents an additional tool for maintaining French state presence at sea, particularly for migrant assistance operations in the English Channel.
A Major Asset for Maritime Security
PCG Rozel represents a significant advance in the Maritime Gendarmerie's intervention capabilities. This achievement confirms MAURIC's position as a leading player in French naval architecture and demonstrates the national industry's capability to meet the challenges of state action at sea.
